Four Names of Fortune is the anthology title. My story is called Wanderlust Vanquished.
“What is wrong?” Callie asked from her seat at the desk, not looking up from the latest paper she’d grabbed from the stack.
Oh, are we speaking now? the foot replied.
“You sighed out loud. I’m sure the whole floor heard it. People will start thinking the place is haunted.”
My apologies. I needed to practice because it’s been a while. Perhaps you could send me out with the next person you dispatch, so I can report back for you. Surely you have someone you want to keep an eye on.
“Not necessarily . . .” Callie started, as her eyes drifted down to the paper once again.
The foot was hopeful. But?
“I’ve gotten a message from a village not far from here, and it really isn’t a top priority, but perhaps it’s something you could take care of, if you’re bored.”
Bored? I am not bored! the rabbit’s foot replied.
Callie looked toward him with an eyebrow raised.
Okay, I am desperately bored; I am dying in here. Nothing ever happens! But how am I supposed to take care of anything myself? May I remind you that I don’t have legs?
Callie stood from her chair and picked up the rabbit’s foot. “I have an idea about that actually. Nanshe knows a lot of rare spells that I didn’t learn in school. I haven’t had time to learn many from her yet, but she’s bound to know something that could give you a body or transform your own. If you’d be interested in taking on this small job for me.”
What is it? Will I be fighting dragons? Rescuing damsels?
“No to the first, and possibly to the second.” Callie carried the foot out of the office.
He felt excitement for the first time in a long while.
