Look at this week’s beauty! Here is a teaser from EG Moore’s The Shattered Sea. She actually sent me a couple teasers from this book and it was so hard to choose!
Entering the Fog Wall
The canyon narrowed still further as we approached. It loomed above me, a great maw ready to devour me. Our party hushed; our soft footprints muffled in the red dirt that puffed at each step.
Morem walked with the rope taut between us, as far away as he could be without dislodging it. Asrar stayed close, tense. Jaya and Serelda paraded in front of us, fighting sticks and long spear at the ready. Jaya had put on a tunic tight at the sleeves after wrapping her arm tighter, bandages layered deeper, than I had previously done for her. It almost looked as though an arm bracer hid beneath one sleeve.
The rhythmic stride of Will and Jakob behind us bolstered my spirit, though the trepidation of the morning still hung over me like a cloak. Until now, I had thought only of either of them being the deaths I predicted, but I’d come to care for all of those in my party. My hands trembled a little as I tugged almost subconsciously again on the rope at my waist.
The white wall of mist rose to meet us, curly and darting extraordinarily about the canyon. Asrar and Jaya had assured us they could not see through it any more than we could, nor could anyone be hiding inside or on the other side. Still, the irregular behavior of the natural phenomenon addled my nerves.
We all paused several feet away from the wall, seemingly holding our breaths.
Jaya muttered quick words in the Bloss core language, a rhythmic plea probably meant for her god.
I glanced at Asrar to see if he likewise prayed. He only stared ahead, jaw tight.
Serelda stepped forward first and Jaya scuffled to keep step with her. They moved through the first layer, their forms still visible, swathed in a ghostly film.
I glanced at my feet and noticed some dark objects laying to my right, just before the fog. They looked like little birds, three tiny sparrows. Their wings pointed in weird directions, as though they’d been broken, odd considering the straight line their bodies made along the fog line. I shivered, wondering if that was some sort of sign.
