Why our vacuum sealer is 100% worth it!

venison meat that has been portioned and vacuum sealed.

This was one of those purchases that I was really wary of. I didn’t think we would use it enough to recoup the several hundred dollars we would spend on it. I was wrong, my husband was right. I don’t use it every day but I use it several times a week.

Right after grocery shopping, and I put items away, I use our vacuum sealer to season our meat for the week, some of which is cooked in the sous vide right in that same bag. Also I use it to individually portion snacks for our lunches. Sometimes I use it to seal and freeze something I bought on sale. On other days I make a meal ahead, portion, seal, and freeze for my bagged lunches. Lastly, we use it following a successful hunt, fishing trip, or bountiful harvest from the garden to portion, seal, and portion that goodness for another day. My freezer has more vacuum sealed packages than anything else.

Buying in Bulk & Vacuum Sealing: A Homesteader’s Best Friend!

Let’s talk about something near and dear to my heart: buying in bulk. If you’ve ever had that moment in the grocery store where you stare at the giant bag of rice and think, Do I really need 25 pounds of this? The answer is YES. Yes, you do. Especially if you have a vacuum sealer!

Now, I get it, bulk buying can seem a little overwhelming at first. But trust me, once you start stocking up and sealing things into manageable portions, you’ll wonder why you ever shopped any other way.

📌 Saves Money – Per unit, bulk purchases are almost always cheaper. Whether it’s grains, beans, meat, or even cheese, buying in larger quantities means you get more bang for your buck. Shop the sales and you end up with a stocked pantry for far less than usual.

📌 Less Waste – Fewer trips to the store means less plastic packaging and fewer impulse buys.

📌 Always Stocked Up – Ever run out of something right when you need it? Not anymore! Having a bulk supply means you’re always prepared, whether it’s for a big family dinner or an unexpected storm.

📌 Better Quality – When you buy from co-ops, farmers, or bulk suppliers, you often get fresher, higher-quality food than what’s sitting on grocery store shelves.

So, you’ve got your bulk haul. Now what? If you don’t want a freezer full of rock-hard, freezer-burned meat or pantry items going stale, vacuum sealing is the way to go!

🌀 Keeps Food Fresher, Longer – Sealing out air prevents spoilage and freezer burn, keeping food fresh for months (or even years!).

🌀 Saves Space – No more awkward half-open bags of rice spilling all over your pantry. Vacuum-sealed portions stack neatly and take up way less space.

🌀 Perfect Portions – Divide up flour, rice, beans, nuts, cheese, and meat into sizes that work for your family. No more thawing an entire 10-pound pack of chicken when you only need two breasts!

🌀 Prevents Pests – Bugs love grains and dry goods. Vacuum sealing keeps them out of your food and out of your kitchen!

What to Buy in Bulk & Seal?

Meat – Buy a whole chicken, break it down, and vacuum seal the parts. Or stock up on beef, pork, and fish when they’re on sale!

Cheese – Yes, you can vacuum seal cheese! Just portion it out and refrigerate or freeze.

Flour & Sugar – Store in smaller, manageable portions to prevent spoilage and clumping.

Beans, Rice, & Pasta – Perfect for long-term storage and easy meal planning.

Coffee – Buy in bulk, seal in small portions, and keep the extra in the freezer for ultimate freshness!

Veggies & Fruit – Blanch and freeze produce on sale (or that you grew) so you can enjoy summer’s bounty all year long.
