So, you’ve got skills. Maybe you can bake the flakiest biscuits this side of the Mississippi, stitch up a torn pair of jeans like magic, or grow tomatoes so perfect they belong in a museum. Or maybe your talents are more digital like: writing, graphic design, or making spreadsheets that are almost (dare I say) fun to look at. Whatever it is, you have something valuable.
But here’s the thing: you don’t have to leave home to make money from those skills. Nope. You can turn your talents into cash right from your kitchen table, your couch, or that one cozy corner of the porch that gets just the right amount of afternoon sun.
So, how do you start?
1. Sell Handmade Goods Online
Got a knack for crafting? Etsy, PayHip, Facebook Marketplace, and even your own website can be goldmines for selling handmade soap, knitted scarves, wooden spoons, candles, quilts, whatever your hands love to make. Bonus: You can ship your creations from home, avoiding awkward in-person sales unless you actually want to chat at the farmer’s market.
2. Teach What You Know
You don’t need a fancy degree to share your skills. Platforms like Teachable, Udemy, and even YouTube let you create courses on everything from sourdough baking to budgeting to basic car maintenance. If you love talking about what you do, why not get paid for it? More and more, local libraries and community organizations are looking for in person classes on everything from tax preparation, to speed reading, gardening to stained glass making.
3. Freelance Your Talents
If you’ve got writing chops, graphic design skills, or social media savvy, sites like Freelancer and Upwork can connect you with clients who will actually pay you for what you do. And the best part? You can work in your pajamas. (Or, let’s be honest, your comfy gardening clothes.) You can really push this in the colder months and not take on as many assignments during your busy seasons. This can be really flexible and a true bonus income.
4. Grow and Sell Local Goods
Not everything has to be online! If you have extra herbs, eggs, produce, or flowers, you can set up a front yard farmstand, sell to neighbors, or even barter with other local makers. If you enjoy the social side of selling, you can also hit up local farmer’s markets or local festivals—but only if you want to. On the sunny gorgeous days I enjoyed the farmers markets, on the cold rainy days…not so much. I’m currently debating whether to get a booth for book sales and book swag this summer.
5. Write and Publish
Ever thought about writing books, ebooks, or guides? If you have knowledge to share – whether it’s a how-to guide on homesteading, a collection of your favorite recipes, or even a novel – self-publishing platforms like Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) can get your words out into the world, or you might like a subscription service more, such as Ream or Patreon.
Now I can tell you that this is a hard road. I made more sales faster by crafting goods and selling them at the Farmer’s Market. Also, it depends on your skills how much you can do yourself, how much you can barter, and how much you will pay for (think editing, formatting, illustration, more editing,…) But, once you have it up for sale, you need to market but it’s relatively passive income. Whereas selling local goods, teaching classes, etc has almost nothing passive about it. On the flip side, there is more marketing needed for book sales, usually.
The Best Part? It’s All On Your Terms
The beauty of selling your skills from home is that you set the rules. Want to keep it small? That’s fine. Feel like turning it into a full-blown business? You can do that, too. You’re in control.
So, whether you’re looking for a little side income or the start of something bigger, your skills are worth something, and you don’t even have to leave your house (unless you want to).

Those are some great ideas!
Thank you! Do you have another idea to add?
The ideas you have are ones that I’m thinking of. You could add teaching. I’ve taught webinars from home.
Absolutely! I included that idea, both webinars, self-paced online, and in person classes in a previous post (from a while ago). This can be a fantastic income stream. Thank you.
